Our Mission

Our mission is to make our school a safer and more accepting of all students, regardless of sexual orientation
or gender identity/expression. Our GSA sponsor is Mrs.Fischer (Room 613)
along with our co-sponsor Ms.Edwards (Counselors Office).

Our GSA History

James Bowie High School Gay-Straight Alliance was founded by Pedro G. Calderon with the help of Johne' Tribble and Rebecca (Becki) Clesse and the 1st GSA sponsor Marjorie Parker. It took one school semester to be able to finish to create our GSA By-Laws. The James Bowie High School Gay-Straight Alliance was approved late February of 2009. The first meeting was held in room 522 Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009. We had more then the double of attendees then what we expected and had prepared for; over 60 students were present.

General GSA History

Gay-Straight Alliances are student organizations, found primarily in high schools and universities. They are meant to provide a safe and supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their straight allies. The first GSA was started in Concord, Massachusetts at Concord Academy by Kevin Jennings, the creator of the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN). The first public school gay–straight alliance was started at Newton South High School (Newton Center, Massachusetts) by teacher, Robert Parlin.
